Due to their materials and construction, consumer dental products have traditionally not been accepted into kerbside recycling programs. As a result, each year tonnes of plastic toothbrushes and other discarded oral care waste gets dumped into landfills, or worse, ends up polluting the ocean.
Fortunately, dental companies are starting to acknowledge that they too have a responsibility to minimise the impact that their products have on the environment. Colgate has partnered with TerraCycle to sponsor the TerraCycle Oral Care Recycling Program. This program enables the recycling of various consumer dental care products (of any brand), including toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and lids and dental floss containers, as well as associated packaging.
Goodwood Dental is proud to announce that we are now a drop-off point for the TerraCycle Oral Care Recycling Program.
Items eligible for recycling include toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes, toothbrush and toothpaste tube outer packaging and floss containers. Unfortunately, electronic toothbrushes and electronic toothbrush parts are not currently recyclable through this program. Items to be recycled should have most excess product removed (they do not need to be rinsed clean) and be dry before they are placed in the drop-off.
Once a full shipment of recycling has been collected, we will forward it to TerraCycle where it will be separated by composition, shredded and melted so that it can be remolded into new products. We will receive $0.02 (2 cents) from TerraCycle for every item of waste received which will be donated to Catherine House, a charity which offers accommodation and support services for women experiencing homelessness.
We encourage everyone (patient or not) to do their bit for the environment whilst helping a very worthwhile cause and bring their used dental products into the practice for recycling. The drop-off is located on our reception desk, and while you are there feel free to help yourself to a refreshment in our waiting room.
